QGIS TPI Based Landform Classification Style

In SAGA GIS (and by extension - QGIS) there is a tool called Topographic Position Index.
It is a tool that assigns an index value based upon the land form feature - ridges and peaks are assigned positive values, and valleys are assigned negative values.

In addition to this tool - there is a TPI based landform classification - which takes that Position index, and classifies the landscape into different land forms, such as:

• Canyons, deeply incised streams,
• Mid-slope drainage, shallow valleys
• Upland drainage, headwaters
• U-shaped valleys
• Plains
• Open slopes
• upper slopes/messas
• local ridges/hills in valleys
• midslope ridges, small hills in plains
• Mountain tops and high ridges

Basically, I've created a QGIS style based upon the map used in the poster by A. Weiss.

The TPI Based Landform Classification is useful for determining the landform characteristics for a given area - and by classifying them into set categories, one can compare landforms in different areas. 

To use the tool you need a DEM, and QGIS. 

The tool is located in the Processing Toolbox under SAGA>Terrain Analysis - Morphology > TPI based landform classification

Dinorwic Office Building scale drawing

Here is my second drawing. It is an office on Australia Level in Dinorwic quarry. The internal wall has a large opening, possibly for a counter or similar. Walls are slate slabs, similar to other buildings, but rendered over the top.

Dinorwic Slate Quarry Scale Drawings- #3 Penrhydd Bach Locomotive Shed

Here is my 2nd attempt at a scale drawing. This is for the shed Penrhydd Bach in Dinorwic Quarry. This shed housed the Quarry Hunslet locomotive called “Holy War” for a time.
This isn’t totally finished, as there is in fact a store house that was built later on behind the locomotive shed, which can be seen here.
The measurements I’ve used are from Pete Wilson, and are from April 1987
These are his original designs that he so kind to copy for me.

This is a bit different from the previous designs, as I’ve included a cutting list for the walls. This was actually never intended for release as it was just for my cutter/plotter to cut out the walls from Styrene sheets.

Lernion Locomotive Shed - Denorwic Slate Quarry

This is a schematic diagram of the Lernion Locomotive Shed at the Dinorwic Slate quarry in North Wales. It's build up from a number of photographs from here:

The scale is set in LayOut to 1:72 for printing on A4.

So, little while ago I told you about my latest model submitted to 3d Warehouse. After a few weeks, it finally got accepted! So, in Google Earth, switch the 3D Buildings thing on and go to:  53°13'36.84"N   4° 9'32.21"W

New Google Earth Model (Hopefully...)

During the first couple days in Bangor University there was very little work happening, so I found time to make a model of this boathouse I found myself rather attracted to, there is something about it in a very weathered state that is very... cool.

I recommend actually looking at it in the 3d Warehouse rather than that picture... doesnt give much of an impression..
I'm still waiting for the review to come through on whether it is acceptable in the Google Earth Layer, but here is hoping!

Random amusing

Before I became a biologist I was studying a BSc in Aircraft Maintainance in the International Centre for Aerospace Training (ICAT) in Cardiff Airport. Some mates and I were in cardiff after lectures, going to the Somali consolate or embassy or similar (one was Somalian). We were in the lift and these 2 guys got in, one said to the other "meet Skipper, he's studying in ICAT." I was like how the crap does he know that? Have I met him before? Then I realised I was still wearing my ID card :)

Back to Yorkshire

So, today I headed back up to Yorkshire. I was due to stay until tomorrow, and use this day to orient myself around the area while i still had the car. But I was feeling homesick already and decided that I'd just ship out.
But, I did take one last tour up through Llanberis, through the Llanberis Pass to Nant Peris

After Nant Peris I headed towards Capel Curig, and from there to Betws-y-Coed. From here I got a little bit lost as I was relying on my GPS kicking in at this point, but it failed to do so, so I ended up VFRing it to Denbigh.  (That's Visual Flight Rules.. It's an aviation term, but it translates easily enough to going by eye)
And from there it was back towards Liverpool, Manchester and the big motorways... where I was very naughty and snapped a picture, unless you're the police, in which someone else took it.


So glad to be home! Went and stared at cows for a bit, and begun packing for Egypt!



Egypt here I come!
